Have you ever wondered how builders decide where to build a new building or where to put the parking lot? Well, that is the job of an engineering surveyor. If you like math and you’d rather be outdoors than sitting at a desk, you may have what it takes to be an engineering surveyor. One of an engineering surveyor’s many tasks is to lay out construction projects and verify the position of buildings and other structures during the construction process. They stake reference points and markers that guide the construction of new buildings and roads. To do this, they use a coordinate system for the project.

The town of Anywhere plans to build a new police station, fire station, and town office building on the corner of East-West State Route 42 and North-South State Route 25. As an engineering surveyor, you will mark the exact locations where the construction company will build each structure. There will be a main roadway into the complex and you must mark exactly where the road should start and end. A second phase of design and construction is planned for the future, so the main roadway will end in a small traffic circle. Of course, each building will also need parking lots and entrance roads to get from the main road to the parking lots. Your plans will guide the construction of the whole complex.
